Hey players,

There's something that has been voiced endlessly by our community for quite some time now; the Protection Kit. Some players love it, some hate it. I am creating this thread to manage the discussion regarding this kit and come to an effective and fair resolution for all.

Before proceeding to share your thoughts I ask that you:
  1. write with consideration to what has been posted already
  2. refrain from making a single post that is not entirely relevant to the topic of Protection kit. (I will dismiss posts to maintain an effective discussion.)
  3. share freely, please don't think your opinion is worse than others. All opinions are valued.
  4. aim to provide a solution
  5. discuss efficiently
  6. please try to understand that MCBall gameplay is meant to be competitive and challenging

It was implemented as a way to stop spawn camping wasn't it? Instead of making it a kit, why doesn't everyone just spawn with it every time? Then it isn't over powered to any one person and makes it dangerous to cruise the spawn points looking for easy targets. It isn't over powered then because everyone has it? Seems like a good solution to me.

How about no one has it :p. Because in paintball one hit and your out

Because it was implemented to stop a legitimate problem. Spawn camping. It gives a player enough time to get moving before someone can shoot them.

I'd just like to start off by saying that I don't want to remove protection, I just think that it should be changed.
For the sake of making my point, I'm going to compare it to Ninja.

Killstreaks for Ninja:
3 Kills: Receive two extra grappling hooks and extended grappling range by 5 blocks.
5 Kills: Receive two extra grappling hooks.
7 Kills: Your entire team receives TWO grappling hooks to use and 1 grappling hook every time you reload.

Supa made a point about how when the shield is broken, you only have your paintballs to use. But I think this is fair because you've used up your "advantage" and now have to play regularly (just like when you've used up your flash potion/ninja hooks/frosty bombs/etc).

However, the big difference that I see is that with protection, it regens every 30 seconds, which could be comparable to a 7 killstreak for Ninja (having your kit regen until your death). If the situation was reversed and people got ninja hook shots every 30 seconds there would probably be a huge uproar, understandably.

To nerf the protection kit, I think that the killstreaks and cooldown should be changed as follows:

Base: You have a protective vest with no regen.
3 Kills: Your vest is regenerated and the player gains 3 seconds of speed boost when the vest breaks.
5 Kills: Your vest is regenerated and the protective vest is rigged with flashbangs that blind enemies within 5 blocks of its wearer when hit.
7 Kills: Your vest is regenerated and has a cooldown of 30 seconds after every use. The vest is also strong enough to resist sniper bullets.

I think that this would help force people to go out and get kills rather than sit behind a wall camping until their vest has regenerated.

I like the idea of having another chance when you may have slipped up. I don't think the issues with this kit are with the idea, but rather that whether or not a player has kills, they have an indefinte number of lives.

(Also sorry if this doesn't make too much sense, I'm quite tired. I might edit this later to clear up what I was trying to say if it's too unclear.)

Mercy kit was implemented to reduce the effectiveness of spawn camping, protection was not.

Many other kits also get their abilities back after a period of time (Vortex, Magneto, Sniper, to name a few).

In my opinion, Protection kit is mainly useful for one thing. Getting away when you have the flag. If you have protection kit and your running to your base because you have the flag it is harder for the other team to get you. But, when you using it during combat, it is, in most cases, almost useless. People can throw snowballs very fast. I think that they should they should change the killstreaks to CandyLand455's idea, but make it so that the protection kit so that the shields breaks in one hit, but takes 2 seconds to break. That way it will protect you from getting insta-killed anyway.

xCandyland Thanks for your feedback. I like the approach to motivate kills to extend your abilities, as per the concept of killstreaks. It certainly overcomes the problem of peaking, then hiding when you get hit once. However, I can also see it going back to square one if the protection gets a multi-kill - They'll already be at a 5 KS and not too far from 7KS and the current behaviour. It does also make them more powerful if they obtain killstreak goals in a short duration. Imagine walking into the base and killing two players. Then, hit once. Then, killing another two players. Then, hit once. They would be practically invulnerable for a short duration of time. Do you agree?

Regarding the killstreak regeneration, players could still technically wait out and hide until they get a higher killstreak - that could be seen as the same problem.
iluvchickenwingz Thanks for your feedback. I agree completely that Protection is a lot weaker against fast clickers. I don't like the idea of the player being invulnerable for 2 extra seconds. If that were to be done, it would need to disable the Protection player for that duration, like maybe freezing them and blinding them?
