It does fit the definition that I posted but yet I don't agree with it completely such as Marching band or dancing. (I'm going to get so much hate for this) but many of my friends consider marching band a sport because it require physical exertion and skill but they tend to forget that marching band is a musical competition and not a physical competition.
This goes for the same with dance but there are points where dance is a competition is all about that physical dancing but there's also parts such as ball room dancing or just dancing for fun. I have plenty of friend who dance in teams and in competition but just as many that dance for the art style itself that's for self expression and entertainment. Dancing is a hard one since there is so many branches of it that its hard to find a pin point definition or description of what dancing is in today's world.

A sport is a competition, simply there is a goal to be met, and that makes it a sport. What makes chess a sport? The fact that you have a goal in mind, to beat your opponent... While you may not break a physical sweat, you surely break a mental sweat.
I am not creative so this is my signature.

There are competitions and it does involve physical activity, but it's not in the Olympics like most other sports. It has it's own competitions of course, but those aren't as big as competitions such as the World Series and the FIFA World Cup.

I would like to consider it a sport because it does fit most definitions, but it just doesn't seem right...

While there are dance competitions, Dance is actually intended to be a form of expression and art. I would not consider it a sport. I also wish it had not become competitive. The only reason it has is because parents have gotten to wrapped up in "my kid is better than your kid" mentality. You notice there is little competition outside the youth aspect of dance. Not in terms of people being competitive when trying to get into the a company, but in terms of walking across the stage and accepting trophies kind of competition.

I think most professional dancers would not consider dance a sport. It is a way to create a living art piece. It is for creating something beautiful for people to look at, not a competition.

I'm going to have to think about this some more. But I would say that a sport has the following characteristics. I have in many conversations actually refered to MCBall as a sport. At least for me that is how I have viewed it for a while. At least since I got involved in torunament play.

1) A challenging goal that can be measured or quantified.
2) Competition is usually involved.
3) The mastery of some sort of skill.
4) Judges or referees.
5) Rules define the boundaries of how the sport is played.
6) Usually there is a time limit or ending to the challenge
7) Participation

So by the above you could say soccer, chess, or even who has grown the biggest pumpkin is a sport or hotdog eating contest, and dog shows. Chess has been called a sport for a long time for those of you who don't know. I think the word can be both a noun and a verb. Baseball is a sport (noun). He showed good sportsmanship (ok noun again). That was sure sporting of him (verb).

On the other hand building the largest dog house is not a sport because nobody else is into mastering that skill.
Opening doors are not a sport because it isn't challenging.
Breathing air is not a sport because anyone can do it.
Who can go out and break the most stuff on a Saturday evening is not a sport because there are no rules.
People would argue that ICE SKATING is or isn't a sport because the judging is too subjective or biased.
And who can eat the most hot dogs in their lifetime is not a sport because there isn't any time limit or way to judge it.

Baseball or chess on the other hand are sports......

A sport is competitive competition. It doesn't have to be physical or anything like that.
